Research guide
Research landscape
Hamburg is one of the main research hubs in Germany, alongside Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin and Nuremberg. Full-service agencies work alongside qualitative specialists, B2B and healthcare firms, field and telephone studios and online panel providers. With a GDP of €168.3 billion in 2025, the city is also a major location for B2B and business research.
Who you will interview
Hamburg is both a city and a federal state (Land). 41.9% of residents had a migration background at the end of 2025, and 58.3% of under-18s. The largest groups of origin are Turkey (12.2% of people with a migration background), Poland (8.5%) and Afghanistan (7.7%), and 20.7% of residents held a foreign nationality in 2023.
In 2023, 17.8% of residents were 65 or over and 16.8% were under 18. Households are small (1.8 people on average) and 54.9% are one-person households, so studies of families or couples need quotas on household type. For migrant audiences, consider translated questionnaires or bilingual interviewers.
Fieldwork in practice
Hamburg has 7 boroughs (Bezirke), with large differences between them: the share of residents with a migration background ranges from 34.2% in Eimsbüttel and Hamburg-Nord to 55.1% in Harburg and 56.2% in Hamburg-Mitte, and from 9.8% to 89.1% between individual districts (Stadtteile). Sampling or quotas by borough help control the spread of interviews.
Most residents rent: in the 2022 census, 77.1% of dwellings were rented and only 20.8% were lived in by their owners. The population also moves a lot (91,309 arrivals and 82,777 departures in 2025), so address lists age quickly and door-to-door studies need more contact attempts. Online panels are the main method for consumer surveys, with telephone or face-to-face interviews for older or offline audiences.
Focus groups and qualitative research
In-person focus groups are usually held in dedicated studios with a one-way mirror and video streaming, most of them in central Hamburg. Allow for travel time from outer boroughs such as Harburg or Bergedorf when scheduling evening groups.
Ask the agency for its Hamburg incentive levels and recruitment lead times; B2B and senior respondents often prefer online interviews. Online communities and video interviews are widely used, alone or alongside in-person groups.
Timing
Hamburg sets its own school holidays. In 2026/27: autumn holidays from 19 to 30 October 2026, Christmas holidays from 21 December 2026 to 1 January 2027, spring holidays from 1 to 12 March 2027, a May break from 7 to 15 May 2027 and summer holidays from 1 July to 11 August 2027. Families and business targets are harder to reach in these periods.
Reformation Day (31 October) is a public holiday in Hamburg. Check national public holidays in the Germany guide.
Working with a Hamburg agency
- Share a clear brief: objectives, target, sample size, boroughs or areas, method, languages and deadline.
- For face-to-face or recruitment, ask how the agency reaches renters, recent movers and migrant communities.
- For focus groups, ask for the studio address, viewing room capacity, streaming options and incentive levels.
- Ask whether the agency is a member of ADM or BVM and follows the German research guidelines.
- Compare several proposals: you can send one request to up to 5 Hamburg companies from this page.
National rules (data protection, holidays, sampling across regions) are covered in our guide to market research in Germany.
Frequently asked questions
How many people live in Hamburg?
About 1.87 million: 1,869,473 at the end of 2025, across 7 boroughs (Hamburg-Mitte, Altona, Eimsbüttel, Hamburg-Nord, Wandsbek, Bergedorf and Harburg).
Do I need to translate a questionnaire for Hamburg?
Not for most studies, but 41.9% of residents have a migration background, most often from Turkey, Poland or Afghanistan, and 20.7% hold a foreign nationality. Translations or bilingual interviewers help when these groups matter.
Is an online survey representative of Hamburg residents?
For most consumer targets, it can be with quotas and weighting. Set quotas on Hamburg figures rather than national ones: households are smaller (54.9% are one-person households) and the share of residents with a migration background differs a lot between boroughs.
Why is door-to-door fieldwork harder in Hamburg?
Because 77.1% of dwellings are rented and people move often: 91,309 people moved in and 82,777 moved out in 2025. Face-to-face studies need more contact attempts and time.
When should fieldwork be avoided in Hamburg?
Avoid the school holidays: 19 to 30 October 2026, 21 December 2026 to 1 January 2027, 1 to 12 March 2027, 7 to 15 May 2027 and the summer from 1 July to 11 August 2027.
