Research guide
Research landscape
Düsseldorf is the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia, the most populous German Land, and its second-largest city after Cologne. Full-service agencies work alongside qualitative specialists, B2B and healthcare firms, field and telephone studios and online panel providers.
The city is also a strong location for B2B research. On 30 June 2024, 461,021 employees subject to social insurance worked in Düsseldorf, and 290,704 of them commuted in from outside the city. Large trade fairs at Messe Düsseldorf, such as MEDICA, boot and ProWein, bring international visitors.
Who you will interview
At the end of 2024, 46.0% of registered residents had a migration background and 25.5% were not German citizens. The largest foreign nationalities are Turkish (12,818), Ukrainian (11,678) and Greek (9,328), followed by Polish and Italian. Düsseldorf also has a large Japanese community: 6,419 Japanese citizens lived in the city at the end of 2024, the 7th largest foreign nationality. For migrant and expatriate audiences, consider translated questionnaires, English or Japanese versions, or bilingual interviewers.
Households are small: 1.80 people on average, and 54.6% are one-person households, so studies of families or couples need quotas on household type. 19.0% of residents are 65 or over, and the average age was 43.1 years at the end of 2024.
Fieldwork in practice
Düsseldorf is divided into boroughs (Stadtbezirke) and districts (Stadtteile) of very different sizes. At the end of 2024, Bilk was the most populous Stadtteil (41,727 registered residents) and Hubbelrath the smallest (1,675). Sampling or quotas by area help control the spread of interviews.
The population moves a lot (42,677 arrivals and 39,014 departures in 2024), so address lists age quickly and door-to-door studies need more contact attempts. Online panels are the main method for consumer surveys, with telephone or face-to-face interviews for older or offline audiences.
Focus groups and qualitative research
In-person focus groups are usually held in dedicated studios with a one-way mirror and video streaming, most of them in central Düsseldorf. Allow for travel time from outer districts when scheduling evening groups.
Ask the agency for its Düsseldorf incentive levels and recruitment lead times; B2B and senior respondents often prefer online interviews. Online communities and video interviews are widely used. Avoid in-person sessions during the street carnival days and the largest trade fairs.
Timing
North Rhine-Westphalia sets its own school holidays. In 2026/27: autumn holidays from 17 to 31 October 2026, Christmas holidays from 23 December 2026 to 6 January 2027, Easter holidays from 22 March to 3 April 2027, a day off on 18 May 2027 and summer holidays from 19 July to 31 August 2027. Families and business targets are harder to reach in these periods.
Carnival season opens on 11 November 2026 (Hoppeditz’ awakening) and peaks from Altweiber (4 February 2027) to Rosenmontag (8 February 2027), ending on Ash Wednesday (10 February 2027); Rosenmontag is not a statutory public holiday. NRW public holidays include Corpus Christi and All Saints’ Day (1 November). Major fairs include MEDICA (16 to 19 November 2026), boot (23 to 31 January 2027) and ProWein (7 to 9 March 2027). Check national public holidays in the Germany guide.
Working with a Düsseldorf agency
- Share a clear brief: objectives, target, sample size, boroughs or areas, method, languages and deadline.
- For face-to-face or recruitment, ask how the agency reaches recent movers, expatriates and migrant communities.
- For focus groups, ask for the studio address, viewing room capacity, streaming options and incentive levels.
- Ask whether the agency is a member of ADM or BVM and follows the German research guidelines.
- Compare several proposals: you can send one request to up to 5 Düsseldorf companies from this page.
National rules (data protection, holidays, sampling across regions) are covered in our guide to market research in Germany.
Frequently asked questions
How many people live in Düsseldorf?
About 619,000: 619,444 at the end of 2025 according to IT.NRW, which makes it the second-largest city in North Rhine-Westphalia after Cologne.
Do I need to translate a questionnaire for Düsseldorf?
Not for most studies, but 46.0% of registered residents have a migration background and 25.5% are not German citizens, most often Turkish, Ukrainian or Greek. The city also has 6,419 Japanese residents. Translations, English versions or bilingual interviewers help when these groups matter.
Is an online survey representative of Düsseldorf residents?
For most consumer targets, it can be with quotas and weighting. Set quotas on Düsseldorf figures rather than national ones: 54.6% of households are one-person households and 46.0% of residents have a migration background.
Do Carnival and trade fairs affect fieldwork in Düsseldorf?
Yes. Street carnival peaks from Altweiber (4 February 2027) to Rosenmontag (8 February 2027), and large fairs such as boot (23 to 31 January 2027) and ProWein (7 to 9 March 2027) fill the city. Avoid in-person fieldwork and focus groups on those days if you can.
When should fieldwork be avoided in Düsseldorf?
Avoid the NRW school holidays: 17 to 31 October 2026, 23 December 2026 to 6 January 2027, 22 March to 3 April 2027 and the summer from 19 July to 31 August 2027, as well as the carnival days in early February 2027.
