Research guide

Research landscape

Frankfurt is one of the main research hubs in Germany, alongside Hamburg, Munich, Berlin and Nuremberg. Full-service agencies work alongside qualitative specialists, B2B and healthcare firms, field and telephone studios and online panel providers.

The city is a major location for B2B and financial services research. The European Central Bank, including ECB Banking Supervision, is based in Frankfurt. GDP reached €89.3 billion in 2023, or €115,364 per inhabitant, the highest value in Hesse, and 642,366 employees subject to social insurance worked in the city in June 2024.

Who you will interview

Frankfurt is very international. At the end of 2025, 29.6% of residents were not German citizens. The largest foreign nationalities in the population register are Turkish (24,292), Italian (15,100), Croatian (14,777) and Indian (12,280). At the end of 2023, 57% of registered residents had a migration background.

Households are small: 53.2% were one-person households in June 2022, so studies of families or couples need quotas on household type. At the end of 2023, 16.9% of residents were 17 or under, 15.8% were over 65, and the average age was 41.1 years. For migrant and expatriate audiences, consider translated questionnaires, English versions or bilingual interviewers.

Fieldwork in practice

Frankfurt has 16 Ortsbezirke, divided into Stadtteile of very different sizes: in June 2026, Bockenheim had 47,268 registered residents and the Bahnhofsviertel only 3,728. Sampling or quotas by district help control the spread of interviews.

Most people rent: the owner-occupancy rate was only 20.1% in the 2022 census, so many respondents live in apartment buildings with entry systems and door-to-door studies need more contact attempts. Online panels are the main method for consumer surveys, with telephone or face-to-face interviews for older or offline audiences.

Focus groups and qualitative research

In-person focus groups are usually held in dedicated studios with a one-way mirror and video streaming, most of them in central Frankfurt. Allow for travel time from outer districts when scheduling evening groups.

Ask the agency for its Frankfurt incentive levels and recruitment lead times; banking, finance and other senior B2B respondents often prefer online interviews. Online communities and video interviews are widely used, alone or alongside in-person groups.

Timing

Hesse sets its own school holidays. In 2026/27: Christmas holidays from 23 December 2026 to 12 January 2027, Easter holidays from 22 March to 2 April 2027 and summer holidays from 28 June to 6 August 2027. Schools also have 4 movable days off. Families and business targets are harder to reach in these periods.

Corpus Christi (27 May 2027) is a public holiday in Hesse. Large trade fairs fill the city: Ambiente and Christmasworld from 29 January to 2 February 2027, ISH from 15 to 19 March 2027 and the Frankfurter Buchmesse from 6 to 10 October 2027. Plan local fieldwork around them, or use them to reach trade visitors. Check national public holidays in the Germany guide.

Working with a Frankfurt agency

  • Share a clear brief: objectives, target, sample size, districts or areas, method, languages and deadline.
  • For face-to-face or recruitment, ask how the agency reaches renters, expatriates and migrant communities.
  • For B2B or financial services studies, ask about its experience with banking and senior professional respondents.
  • For focus groups, ask for the studio address, viewing room capacity, streaming options and incentive levels.
  • Ask whether the agency is a member of ADM or BVM and follows the German research guidelines.
  • Compare several proposals: you can send one request to up to 5 Frankfurt companies from this page.

National rules (data protection, holidays, sampling across regions) are covered in our guide to market research in Germany.

Frequently asked questions

How many people live in Frankfurt?

About 761,000: 760,656 at the end of 2025 according to the Hessian State Statistical Office, across 16 Ortsbezirke.

Do I need to translate a questionnaire for Frankfurt?

German is enough for most studies, but 29.6% of residents are not German citizens, most often Turkish, Italian, Croatian or Indian, and 57% of registered residents had a migration background in 2023. English versions, translations or bilingual interviewers help when these groups matter.

Is Frankfurt a good place for B2B and financial services research?

Yes. The European Central Bank is based in the city, which had a GDP of €89.3 billion in 2023 and 642,366 employees subject to social insurance in 2024. Senior respondents are busy, so allow time for recruitment and offer online interviews.

Do trade fairs affect fieldwork in Frankfurt?

Yes. Major fairs such as Ambiente (29 January to 2 February 2027), ISH (15 to 19 March 2027) and the Frankfurter Buchmesse (6 to 10 October 2027) make the city very busy. Avoid in-person fieldwork in those weeks, unless you want to interview trade visitors.

When should fieldwork be avoided in Frankfurt?

Avoid the Hesse school holidays: 23 December 2026 to 12 January 2027, 22 March to 2 April 2027 and the summer from 28 June to 6 August 2027. Corpus Christi (27 May 2027) is also a public holiday in Hesse.
