Research guide
Research landscape
Bangalore, officially renamed Bengaluru in November 2014, is one of India’s main research hubs alongside Mumbai and Delhi NCR. Local agencies work alongside offices of international networks, and many run field teams or partner networks across South India. The city is above all India’s main technology centre: a tech workforce of about 2 million, over 40% of the country’s global capability centres (GCCs) and software exports of about ₹4.54 lakh crore in 2024–25 for the STPI Bengaluru jurisdiction. This makes it a natural base for B2B, IT, start-up and technology research, as well as for usability and product testing.
Who you will interview
Bengaluru Urban district had 9.62 million people at the 2011 census, 91% of them in urban areas, after growth of 47% in ten years, partly driven by migration from other states. Kannada is the mother tongue of only 44.5% of residents, followed by Tamil (15%), Telugu (14%), Urdu (12%), Hindi (6%) and Malayalam (3%); in total, 107 languages were recorded. English is widely used at work, especially in IT and services.
For a general population study, plan questionnaires in Kannada and English at least, with interviewers who also speak Tamil, Telugu or Urdu/Dakhni depending on the areas covered. Many recent arrivals from North and East India speak Hindi. Young, educated IT professionals are easy to reach online but are over-represented in panels: set quotas on age, language and socio-economic class (see the India guide for NCCS and ISEC) so that they do not dominate the sample.
Fieldwork in practice
Since September 2025 the city is run by the Greater Bengaluru Authority, which replaced the BBMP: 5 city corporations (Central, North, South, East and West) and 369 wards over 721 sq km. Older documents and sample frames still use the 198 wards of the former BBMP, so check which boundaries the agency uses for area quotas.
Traffic is the main constraint: in 2025 it took 36 minutes on average to drive 10 km, and the average rush-hour speed was 13.9 km/h. Interviewers cover fewer addresses per day than in smaller cities, and central locations should be chosen close to the target. Large tech parks and gated residential communities have security at the entrance: face-to-face B2B interviews and door-to-door work usually need appointments, permissions or recruitment through networks rather than cold contact. Phone access is very high in urban Karnataka (191.5 connections per 100 people in December 2025), so online and telephone (CATI) methods work well for most urban targets.
Focus groups and qualitative research
In-person focus groups are held in dedicated rooms with viewing facilities or in agency offices; for some targets, groups in respondents’ homes are also used. Schedule evening groups with travel time in mind and avoid venues that respondents must cross the city to reach.
IT professionals, start-up founders and senior B2B respondents are busy and often work late or across time zones: online interviews and video groups are widely used. Ask the agency for its Bangalore incentive levels, recruitment lead times and how it verifies job titles for professional targets.
Timing
Bengaluru receives about 931 mm of rain a year, with the heaviest rain in September and October, when flooding and traffic can slow face-to-face fieldwork. The main festival period runs from around August to November: Ganesh Chaturthi (August or September), Dasara and Ayudha Puja (September or October), Deepavali (October or November) and Kannada Rajyotsava, the state day, on 1 November. Ugadi (March or April) and Sankranti (January) are also public holidays in Karnataka.
Workers from other states may travel home during the main festivals, and B2B targets are busy around the end of the financial year in March.
Working with a Bangalore agency
- Share a clear brief: objectives, target, sample size, areas or corporations, method, languages and deadline.
- Agree on the languages of the questionnaire (Kannada, English and others) and how translations are checked.
- For B2B and IT targets, ask how respondents are recruited and how their job titles and companies are verified.
- For face-to-face fieldwork, ask how the agency handles traffic, gated communities and access to tech parks.
- For focus groups, ask for the venue address, viewing options and incentive levels.
- Compare several proposals: you can send one request to up to 5 Bangalore companies from this page.
National rules (data protection, holidays, sampling across regions) are covered in our guide to market research in India.
Frequently asked questions
Is it Bangalore or Bengaluru?
Both refer to the same city. Its official name has been Bengaluru since November 2014, but Bangalore is still widely used, including in business.
How many people live in Bangalore?
The 2011 census counted 9.62 million people in Bengaluru Urban district and 8.52 million in the urban agglomeration, the 5th largest in India. The district grew by 47% between 2001 and 2011; newer census figures are expected after the 2027 census.
In which languages should a questionnaire be written for Bangalore?
Kannada and English cover most needs, but Kannada is the mother tongue of only 44.5% of residents. Tamil (15%), Telugu (14%), Urdu (12%) and Hindi (6%) are also widely spoken, so bilingual interviewers or extra translations help for general population studies.
Is Bangalore a good place for B2B and IT research?
Yes. The city has a tech workforce of about 2 million and over 40% of India’s global capability centres. Access to tech parks is controlled, so recruitment usually goes through panels, networks and appointments, and many interviews are held online.
When should fieldwork be avoided in Bangalore?
Plan around the festival season from around August to November (Ganesh Chaturthi, Dasara, Deepavali, Kannada Rajyotsava on 1 November) and the heaviest rain in September and October. B2B targets are also busy around the end of the financial year in March.
