Research guide
Research landscape
Ahmedabad is Gujarat’s main commercial city and a base for consumer, retail and B2B research across the state. Local agencies work alongside offices of national firms, and many run field teams in other Gujarat cities, which helps when Ahmedabad is one of several towns in a state or national sample.
For B2B studies, two industries stand out. Textiles built the city, nicknamed the “Manchester of the East”, where one of India’s first textile mills opened in 1861. Pharmaceuticals are the other pillar: several large drug makers have their head offices in Ahmedabad. For financial services, GIFT City in neighbouring Gandhinagar is India’s first International Financial Services Centre, with more than 1,034 registered entities and 38 banks in November 2025.
Who you will interview
At the 2011 census, 5.58 million people lived in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, 6.36 million in the urban agglomeration and 7.21 million in Ahmedabad district. A new census is under way, so these figures are old: ask the agency which sources and estimates it uses to set quotas.
Gujarati is the main language of Ahmedabad. Consumer questionnaires should be written in Gujarati, with Hindi for migrant workers and some neighbourhoods; English works for many B2B and executive interviews. Literacy is high (88.16% in the urban agglomeration in 2011) and there were 899 women per 1,000 men.
Food habits matter for FMCG and food studies: in Gujarat, only 39% of women and 51% of men said they eat fish, chicken or meat (NFHS-5, 2019–21), so vegetarian products, recipes and restaurants should be covered carefully. Alcohol is prohibited in Gujarat under the Gujarat Prohibition Act, 1949: residents can only get a permit on health grounds, and visitors from other states can get permits. Since December 2023, hotels, restaurants and clubs in GIFT City may serve alcohol to employees and authorised visitors. Studies on alcohol therefore need a specific design and legal check; ask the agency what it can do.
Fieldwork in practice
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation is divided into 7 zones and 48 wards over 464.16 sq km. Sampling by zone or ward helps control the spread of interviews, and the brief should say whether the rest of the urban agglomeration, Ahmedabad district or Gandhinagar are in scope.
Face-to-face interviews (CAPI) remain the reference for the general population and lower-income households. Mobile phones are widespread (72.7 million subscriptions in the Gujarat telecom service area and a tele-density of 100.61% in June 2026), so telephone and online interviews work well for many urban targets, with quotas and weighting set on Ahmedabad figures rather than national ones.
Focus groups and qualitative research
In-person groups are held in dedicated rooms or in venues rented by the agency, and in respondents’ homes for some targets. Groups are usually moderated in Gujarati, sometimes in Hindi, with simultaneous translation into English for clients: check that it is available and budgeted.
Ask the agency for its Ahmedabad incentive levels, recruitment lead times and screening checks against repeat respondents. Textile, pharma and finance professionals often prefer short online interviews scheduled around office hours.
Timing
Uttarayan, the kite festival of 14 January, is a state holiday: on the day almost all normal activity stops and people fly kites from rooftops, and in 2026 the International Kite Festival ran from 10 to 17 January. Navratri brings nine nights of garba dancing that run late, with crowds and traffic (the Vibrant Navratri Festival took place from 11 to 20 October 2026; Dussehra was on 20 October). Diwali and the Gujarati New Year follow in October or November: in 2026, Diwali fell on 8 November, the Gujarati New Year on 10 November and Bhai Beej on 11 November. Avoid these periods, or plan for slower fieldwork.
The weather is the other constraint. May is the hottest month, with an average maximum of 42.2 °C in 2010–2019 and a record of 48 °C on 20 May 2016: from April to June, schedule street and door-to-door interviews in the morning or evening. The monsoon usually reaches Ahmedabad around 21 June, and July and August bring more than 70% of the season’s rain, so build buffer days into face-to-face fieldwork.
Working with an Ahmedabad agency
- Share a clear brief: objectives, target, sample size, areas (city zones, rest of the urban agglomeration, Gandhinagar), method, languages and deadline.
- Ask for questionnaires and moderation in Gujarati, with Hindi where needed, and how translations are checked.
- Agree on the socio-economic classification (NCCS or ISEC) and the quota structure before fieldwork starts.
- For alcohol or other sensitive categories, ask how the study will be designed under Gujarat’s prohibition rules.
- Ask how the schedule allows for Uttarayan, Navratri, Diwali, the summer heat and the monsoon.
- Compare several proposals: you can send one request to up to 5 Ahmedabad companies from this page.
National rules (data protection, holidays, sampling across regions) are covered in our guide to market research in India.
Frequently asked questions
How many people live in Ahmedabad?
At the 2011 census, the latest published, 5.58 million people lived in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and 6.36 million in the urban agglomeration, the 7th largest in India. Ahmedabad district had 7.21 million. A new census is under way.
In which language should a questionnaire be written for Ahmedabad?
In Gujarati, the main language of the city. Add Hindi for migrant workers and some neighbourhoods; English is common for B2B and executive interviews.
Can I run a study on alcohol in Ahmedabad?
With care. Alcohol is prohibited in Gujarat under the Gujarat Prohibition Act, 1949: residents can only get a permit on health grounds, visitors from other states can get permits, and since December 2023 alcohol can be served in wine-and-dine areas of GIFT City. Ask the agency how the study can be designed and check the legal side first.
Is an online or telephone survey representative of Ahmedabad?
For many urban targets, yes, with quotas and weighting: there were 72.7 million mobile subscriptions in the Gujarat telecom service area in June 2026. For lower-income and older households, face-to-face interviews are still needed.
When should fieldwork be avoided in Ahmedabad?
Around Uttarayan (14 January), Navratri (11 to 20 October in 2026) and Diwali and the Gujarati New Year (8 and 10 November in 2026). The summer heat (April to June, up to 42.2 °C on average in May) and the monsoon (from around 21 June) also slow face-to-face fieldwork.
