Research guide

Research landscape

Athens concentrates most of the Greek research industry: full-service agencies, qualitative specialists, B2B and healthcare firms, CATI studios, field networks and online panel providers, many of them also running fieldwork in Thessaloniki, the islands and neighbouring countries. Attica, with 3,814,064 residents in 2021, is the main business centre and the usual location for national coordination, B2B interviews and focus groups.

Who you will interview

In research, “Athens” usually means the whole Attica region, not only the Municipality of Athens (643,452 residents in 2021). Households are small: 34.8% of Attica’s 1,639,402 households have one person. 22.8% of residents are under 25 and 10.4% are 75 and over.

Greek is the fieldwork language for almost all studies. Attica is more diverse than the country as a whole: 9.0% of residents hold a foreign citizenship (7.3% for Greece) and 13.4% were born abroad, and 99,793 households have only foreign members. Studies of migrant audiences may need other language versions or bilingual interviewers. Results for Athens often differ from national averages, so an Athens boost on a national sample is common when Athens findings matter.

Fieldwork in practice

Attica has 8 regional units of very different size: Central Athens alone has 1,002,212 residents, while West Attica has 165,540 and the Islands 70,005. Sampling by regional unit and municipality helps control the spread of interviews and the balance between the city centre, the suburbs and Piraeus. Growth was uneven between 2011 and 2021: the Municipality of Athens and Central Athens lost residents, while North Athens, East Attica and West Attica gained.

In apartment buildings (polykatoikies), access usually depends on the entry phone or a building contact, so face-to-face studies need more contact attempts and time. Online is widely used for consumer surveys, with telephone or in-person interviews for older or offline audiences; national connectivity figures are in the Greece guide.

Focus groups and qualitative research

In-person focus groups are usually held in dedicated facilities with a one-way mirror and video streaming. Allow for travel time across Attica when scheduling evening groups, and check which side of the city the facility serves best for your target.

Ask the agency for its Athens incentive levels, recruitment lead times and how it checks that respondents have not taken part in recent groups. B2B and senior respondents often prefer online interviews; online communities and video interviews are widely used, alone or alongside in-person groups.

Timing

Avoid Orthodox Easter week: in 2027, Orthodox Good Friday is on 30 April and Easter Monday on 3 May, next to 1 May. Avoid also the Christmas and New Year period. In summer, and especially around the 15 August holiday (a Sunday in 2027), families and business targets are harder to reach: allow more fieldwork time in August.

At the same time, Athens is busy with visitors: Athens International Airport handled about 34 million passengers in 2025, up 6.7%. Street intercepts in central and tourist areas need screening to exclude visitors, and respondents working in tourism are harder to reach in the high season.

Working with an Athens agency

  • Share a clear brief: objectives, target, sample size, regional units or municipalities, method, languages and deadline.
  • For face-to-face or recruitment, ask how the agency reaches apartment buildings, the suburbs and migrant communities.
  • For focus groups, ask for the facility address, viewing room capacity, streaming options and incentive levels.
  • Check fieldwork dates against Orthodox Easter, August and 15 August; for opinion polls, check the agency’s registration (see the Greece guide).
  • Compare several proposals: you can send one request to up to 5 Athens companies from this page.

National rules (data protection, holidays, sampling across regions) are covered in our guide to market research in Greece.

Frequently asked questions

How many people live in Athens?

The Attica region, which covers the Athens urban area, had 3,814,064 residents in the 2021 census. The Municipality of Athens itself had 643,452, down from 664,046 in 2011.

How should a survey sample be spread across Athens?

By the 8 regional units of Attica, and by municipality within them. Central Athens has 1,002,212 residents, North Athens 601,163, South Athens 529,455, East Attica 518,755, West Athens 478,883 and Piraeus 448,051, with smaller populations in West Attica and the Islands.

Do I need another language than Greek for Athens?

Not for most studies. But 9.0% of Attica residents hold a foreign citizenship and 13.4% were born abroad (2021 census), so other language versions or bilingual interviewers help when migrant audiences matter.

Why is door-to-door fieldwork harder in Athens?

In apartment buildings, access usually depends on the entry phone or a building contact, and 34.8% of households have only one person, so fewer people are at home to answer. Face-to-face studies need more contact attempts and time.

When should fieldwork be avoided in Athens?

Avoid Orthodox Easter (in 2027, from Good Friday 30 April to Easter Monday 3 May), the Christmas and New Year period and August, especially the days around 15 August.
