Research guide
Research landscape
Sydney is one of the two main research hubs in Australia, with Melbourne. Greater Sydney had 5,638,830 people in June 2025. Full-service agencies work alongside qualitative specialists, social research, B2B and healthcare firms, data analytics companies, field and telephone suppliers and online panel providers.
Who you will interview
Sydney is very multicultural. In the 2021 census, only 56.8% of residents were born in Australia; the top other countries of birth were China (4.6%), India (3.6%), England (2.9%), Vietnam (1.8%) and the Philippines (1.7%). 57.3% of people used only English at home, and 42.0% of households used another language, led by Mandarin (5.0%), Arabic (4.2%), Cantonese (2.8%), Vietnamese (2.2%) and Hindi (1.5%).
For studies on multicultural audiences, plan translated questionnaires or bilingual interviewers in the main languages, and set quotas on Sydney figures rather than national ones. The median age was 37 in 2021, households had 2.7 people on average and 23.2% were lone-person households. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were 1.7% of residents.
Fieldwork in practice
Greater Sydney is spread out: in 2021, 55.8% of occupied homes were separate houses, 12.8% semi-detached houses or townhouses and 30.7% flats or apartments. Face-to-face studies need a sampling plan across the city’s regions, and access to apartment buildings can be harder than to houses.
The population changes fast. In 2024–25, Greater Sydney grew by 1.4%, with 78,403 people from net overseas migration, while it lost 33,282 people to the rest of Australia. 35.9% of homes were rented in 2021. Lists and samples age quickly, so recent arrivals and renters may be under-represented. Online panels are the main method for consumer surveys, with telephone or face-to-face interviews for older, offline or non-English-speaking audiences.
Focus groups and qualitative research
In-person focus groups are usually held in dedicated viewing facilities with a one-way mirror and video streaming, mostly in the CBD and inner suburbs. Allow for travel time from outer areas when scheduling evening groups, or hold groups in a suburban location closer to the target.
Ask the agency for its Sydney incentive levels and recruitment lead times, especially for groups in a language other than English. B2B and senior respondents often prefer online interviews, and online communities and video interviews are widely used, alone or alongside in-person groups.
Timing
Sydney follows the NSW eastern division school calendar. The summer holidays run from 18 December 2026 to 27 January 2027 and are the main period to avoid. In 2027, the other school holidays are autumn from 12 to 23 April, winter from 5 to 16 July and spring from 27 September to 8 October; the next summer holidays start on 21 December 2027.
NSW has its own holidays: the King’s Birthday (14 June 2027) and Labour Day (4 October 2027). The Bank Holiday (2 August 2027) is not a declared public holiday, but retail bank branches and certain financial institutions must close. Check national public holidays and call-time rules in the Australia guide.
Working with a Sydney agency
- Share a clear brief: objectives, target, sample size, areas of Sydney, method, languages and deadline.
- For multicultural studies, ask which languages the agency can cover with its own interviewers and moderators.
- For focus groups, ask for the facility address, viewing room capacity, streaming options and incentive levels.
- Ask whether the agency is a Research Society Company Partner or employs members bound by its Code of Professional Behaviour.
- Compare several proposals: you can send one request to up to 5 Sydney companies from this page.
National rules (data protection, holidays, sampling across regions) are covered in our guide to market research in Australia.
Frequently asked questions
How many people live in Sydney?
Greater Sydney had 5,638,830 people at 30 June 2025, after growth of 1.4% in 2024–25. Net overseas migration added 78,403 people, while 33,282 more people left for other parts of Australia than arrived.
Do I need to translate a questionnaire for Sydney?
Not for most studies, but 42.0% of households use a language other than English at home. The most common are Mandarin, Arabic, Cantonese, Vietnamese and Hindi. Translations or bilingual interviewers help when these groups matter.
Is an online survey representative of Sydney residents?
For most consumer targets, it can be with quotas and weighting. Set quotas on Sydney figures: only 56.8% of residents were born in Australia and 35.9% of homes are rented, and people who do not speak English well may need telephone or face-to-face interviews.
Is the August Bank Holiday a public holiday in Sydney?
No. The NSW Bank Holiday (2 August 2027) is not a declared public holiday, but retail bank branches and certain financial institutions close. NSW public holidays include the King’s Birthday (14 June 2027) and Labour Day (4 October 2027).
When should fieldwork be avoided in Sydney?
Avoid the summer school holidays, from 18 December 2026 to 27 January 2027, and if possible the other NSW school holidays in 2027: 12 to 23 April, 5 to 16 July and 27 September to 8 October.
