Research guide
Research landscape
Manchester is the main research centre of the North of England: full-service agencies, qualitative specialists, field and recruitment companies and viewing facilities work alongside a large public sector and university research community. UK multi-city studies often add Manchester as a northern location next to London, to check that results are not driven by the capital.
Next door in Salford, MediaCityUK hosts a wide range of BBC broadcasts, and ITV completed the first phase of its move there in 2013: the area is a natural base for media, broadcasting and audience research.
Who you will interview
Always say which area you mean. The City of Manchester has 588,256 residents (mid-2025 estimate), while Greater Manchester has 3.02 million across 10 boroughs: Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan. The boroughs differ a lot in age, income and ethnic mix, so a “Manchester” sample drawn from the whole conurbation will not look like the city itself.
The city is very young: the median age is 31, against 40 for England, and 20–24 year olds are the largest age band. It is a major student city: in 2019/20, 73,906 students were enrolled at its two largest universities, the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University, and 13.1% of residents aged 16 and over were economically inactive students in 2021, more than twice the England rate.
Manchester is also much more diverse than the rest of the North West: 56.8% of residents are White (85.6% in the region), 20.9% Asian and 11.9% Black, and 31% were born outside the UK, including 5.6% of residents born in Pakistan. 94 languages are spoken; after English, the most common are Urdu, Arabic and Polish, and in 11% of households no one has English as a main language. Plan quotas on ethnicity and age, and translations or bilingual recruiters when these groups matter.
Fieldwork in practice
Check which population base your quotas use. Manchester City Council estimates that the 2021 census captured 94% of residents and missed at least 33,000 people, mostly aged 18 to 49; the mid-2025 estimate (588,256) is well above the census count (551,938).
Door-to-door interviewing needs more effort than in most English cities: only 37.2% of households own their home (61.3% in England), 32.3% rent privately and 29.5% rent socially, and 28% live in purpose-built blocks of flats, often city-centre apartments with entry systems or student housing. Online is the main method for consumer surveys, with telephone or in-person interviews for older or offline audiences. For street intercepts and in-store work, plan for wet weather: covered locations such as shopping centres and transport hubs are easier.
Focus groups and qualitative research
In-person focus groups are held in viewing facilities or hired venues, usually in or near the city centre. If respondents come from across Greater Manchester, allow for travel time from the outer boroughs and check tram and rail disruption on fieldwork days.
Students and young professionals are easy to recruit during term time, but many students leave the city in university holidays. Ask the agency for its Manchester incentive levels and recruitment lead times; B2B and senior respondents often prefer online interviews.
Timing
Avoid the Christmas and New Year period and plan around bank holidays. In 2026–27, Manchester schools close for the autumn half term from 23 October to 2 November 2026, for Christmas from 18 December 2026 to 4 January 2027, for the February half term from 12 to 22 February 2027, for Easter from 2 to 19 April 2027 and for the May half term from 28 May to 7 June 2027; the summer holidays start on 22 July 2027. Some academies, foundation and voluntary-aided schools use different dates.
Working with a Manchester agency
- Share a clear brief: objectives, target, sample size, City of Manchester or Greater Manchester boroughs, method, languages and deadline.
- For student or young adult targets, check the fieldwork dates against university terms.
- For face-to-face or recruitment, ask how the agency reaches renters, flats and minority communities.
- For focus groups, ask for the venue address, viewing room capacity, streaming options and incentive levels.
- Ask whether the agency is an MRS Accredited Company Partner or employs MRS members bound by the Code of Conduct.
- Compare several proposals: you can send one request to up to 5 Manchester companies from this page.
National rules (data protection, holidays, sampling across regions) are covered in our guide to market research in the United Kingdom.
Frequently asked questions
How many people live in Manchester?
The City of Manchester had 588,256 residents in mid-2025. Greater Manchester, the wider conurbation of 10 boroughs including Salford, Stockport and Trafford, had 3.02 million.
Should a Manchester study cover the city or Greater Manchester?
It depends on the target. The city is younger and more diverse than the conurbation, so define the area in the brief: a sample from the 10 boroughs of Greater Manchester will not match the profile of the city alone.
Is Manchester a good place to interview students and young adults?
Yes: the median age is 31, against 40 for England, and 13.1% of residents aged 16 and over were economically inactive students in 2021. Plan fieldwork in university term time, as many students leave during the holidays.
Do I need to translate a questionnaire for Manchester?
Not for most studies, but 94 languages are spoken in the city, most often Urdu, Arabic and Polish after English, and in 11% of households no one has English as a main language. Translations or bilingual recruiters help when these communities matter.
When should fieldwork be avoided in Manchester?
Avoid Christmas and New Year (schools close from 18 December 2026 to 4 January 2027), bank holidays and school half terms, and expect families and students to be harder to reach from 22 July 2027, when the summer holidays start.
