Research guide

Research landscape

Cyprus has a small research industry serving local clients, international studies and regional projects, with full-service agencies, polling companies, field and CATI suppliers and online panels. Nicosia, the capital, is the largest district (350,035 people), followed by Limassol (262,157), Larnaca (155,765) and Paphos (101,106).

Polling and market research companies are represented by SEDEAK, the Cyprus Association of Polling and Market Research Companies. In November 2025, SEDEAK and ESOMAR held an information day in Nicosia on the code of conduct for conducting and presenting opinion polls and market studies. The international reference is the ICC/ESOMAR International Code, revised in 2025.

Languages and fieldwork

Greek and Turkish are the official languages of the Republic of Cyprus, and Greek is the usual fieldwork language in the government-controlled areas. English is also used in education: public schools teach in Greek or English, and private institutions offer programmes in both. In the 2021 census, 10.1% of residents were EU citizens from other countries and 11.6% were non-EU citizens: studies of foreign residents may need English or other language versions.

Official statistics of the Republic of Cyprus, including the 2021 census, cover the areas under the effective control of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus; the figures on this page refer to those areas. A national sample is usually set by district (Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos and Famagusta) and by urban or rural area. The share of foreign citizens differs widely by district, from 17.3% in Nicosia to 40.0% in Paphos, so quotas by citizenship may be needed.

Which methods work

Connectivity is very high: in 2025, 93.6% of individuals used the internet at least once a week, including 98.5% of people aged 16 to 24 and 81.5% of those aged 55 to 74. There are 156 mobile subscriptions per 100 people. Online surveys using access panels are widely used for consumer research, and mobile-friendly questionnaires are essential.

Because the population is small, some targets are thin in online panels. With 17.2% of people aged 65 and over in 2021, telephone (CATI) and face-to-face interviews remain used for older or offline audiences, rural areas, B2B decision makers and hard-to-reach groups. In-person focus groups can be organised in Nicosia, Limassol and the other district towns.

Timing

Orthodox Easter is the main holiday period of the spring: in 2027, Orthodox Good Friday is on 30 April, Easter Sunday on 2 May and Easter Monday on 3 May, next to 1 May. Other public holidays in 2027 include 1 and 6 January, Clean Monday (15 March), 25 March, 1 April, Holy Spirit Day (21 June), 15 August, 1 October, 28 October and Christmas. Avoid Easter week and the Christmas and New Year period.

Cyprus received 4,534,073 tourist arrivals in 2025. July and August accounted for about 29.8% of nights in tourist accommodation (EU average 31.1%), and visitor numbers stay high in September and October. Respondents working in tourism are harder to reach during the season, and family and business targets around the 15 August holiday. Allow more fieldwork time in summer.

Data protection

Personal data is governed by the GDPR and Law 125(I)/2018 on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data, in force since 31 July 2018. The supervisory authority is the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection.

Under the Cypriot law, a child’s consent to information society services is valid from the age of 14, and some breaches of the GDPR are criminal offences. Ask your agency which lawful basis it uses, how respondents are informed, where the data is hosted and how recordings or video will be shared with you.

Working with a local agency

  • Share a clear brief: objectives, target, sample size, districts, method, languages and deadline.
  • Ask whether the agency is a SEDEAK member and follows the ICC/ESOMAR International Code.
  • Ask which panels or fieldwork suppliers will be used, and how quotas by district, urban/rural area, age, gender and citizenship are set and weighted.
  • Check fieldwork dates against Orthodox Easter, the summer tourist season and 15 August.
  • Agree in writing who is controller and who is processor of the personal data, and the retention period.
  • Compare several proposals: you can send one request to up to 5 companies from this page.

Frequently asked questions

Is an online survey representative of the population of Cyprus?

For most consumer targets, it can be with quotas and weighting: in 2025, 93.6% of individuals used the internet at least once a week. Use is lower among people aged 55 to 74 (81.5%), so telephone or face-to-face interviews may be needed to cover older people well.

Which data protection rules apply to a survey in Cyprus?

The GDPR and Law 125(I)/2018, in force since 31 July 2018, supervised by the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection. Some breaches of the GDPR are criminal offences under the Cypriot law.

When should fieldwork be avoided in Cyprus?

Avoid Orthodox Easter (in 2027, from Good Friday 30 April to Easter Monday 3 May), the Christmas and New Year period and the days around 15 August. July and August are the busiest tourist months, and visitor numbers stay high until October, so allow more time for summer fieldwork.

Which areas do official statistics cover?

Official statistics of the Republic of Cyprus cover the areas under the effective control of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus. In the 2021 census, these areas had 923,381 residents in five districts: Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos and Famagusta.

Which language should a questionnaire use in Cyprus?

Greek for most residents. In the 2021 census, 10.1% of residents were EU citizens from other countries and 11.6% were non-EU citizens, reaching 40.0% foreign citizens in Paphos district, so an English or other language version may be needed for foreign residents.

Can a foreign company run a survey in Cyprus?

Yes. Foreign companies usually commission a Cypriot agency or panel provider, which handles sampling, translation checks, fieldwork and recruitment. Personal data must be processed under the GDPR and Law 125(I)/2018.
